June 2020
Hello there everyone! I do hope you are all well? I am a bit late but here is this months blog. This time I was thinking of chatting about quality of food. Now many of you are no doubt already health conscious and eat really good produce. Some may even grow or rear their own fruit, veg and chickens etc. However, some may still be finding their way.
Now there’s nothing wrong with eating ordinary produce you get from the supermarket if it is not organic. As long as you wash the fruit and veg before you eat it. A lot of fruit and some veg are coated with a wax to make them look palatable or to preserve them and make them last longer. However this means that any pesticides that were used are then locked in. So if this is the case then washing off the wax first is an idea and there are ways to do so. Warm water with apple cider vinegar in the sink may work. Or you can simply peel the fruit. Which is a shame as the skin is where a lot of the goodness is.
It is always best to go organic, though, as the food is so much higher in nutrients and are not covered in pesticides, irradiated or covered in wax. The food tastes better and the colours are amazing. Granted they are not as cheap as normal store bought fruit and veg but its worth it in the long run. Now with meat organic and grass fed is best too. Grass fed is what makes the meat better quality and has the ‘right’ kinds of fat. Grain fed meat is not of that same calibre. The happier the animal the better tasting the meat.
Free range eggs are the best. I won’t get anything else. Not just for ethical reasons, but also because the eggs are far better tasting and look more like eggs. Cage eggs the animals are not happy and are really under stress sitting in cages. In society when demand is so high the producers have to find economical and efficient methods of pumping out produce. However, it can be at the expense of quality.
Salts are another topic. Sea salt is good as it has traces of nutrients and minerals in it. Pink Himalayan salt is also good. Ordinary table salt is not really the best and yet you may be dictated to by what is affordable.
Ultimately, we need to eat food that is going to make us healthy. Many have turned to making their own kombucha, kefir, sauerkraut and kim chi. Even making grain free bread using things such as almond meal. I have tried this, and it is yummy. Not as cheap but definitely yummy.
Many of you are vegan and pretty much know your way around the traps regarding good quality foods and their nutrition. The main thing is, I feel, is that food is so important to our health and I believe that food improves our wellbeing immensely. Avoiding all that processed stuff out there and takeaway. Eating whole foods and as fresh as possible. Looking after our tummies with pre and probiotics. Avoiding alcohol if possible and going easy with caffeine. I only say that as I love my coffee and tea. I have to have one treat at least. That’s my theory and I am sticking to it!!!
Anyway, that is my ramblings for the moment. I do hope all of you are being safe and looking after yourselves. I am gearing up to do a talk via zoom. So if you are interested let me know. Take care and see you next month.
