October 5 2019
Well hello there again! Its almost the end of the year. Again!!! I have been trying to heal and rest as I had been quite exhausted and the only thing to fix that was to rest. Also eating healthy. In this time since I last wrote I have decided to focus mainly on women’s health and gynaecological health. As a colleague pointed out we, as naturopaths, deal with everything. Because of this I decided to just be a naturopath with a special interest in female health as well as stress, burn out and anxiety. This is because they can sometimes be hand in hand.
I feel we, as women, work so hard as mothers, sisters, carers, lovers, partners, business women (and the list goes on) that we become depleted. Our body is a machine with many feedback systems that are can be interconnected. Our hormones and endocrines production and management of them can be interrupted, appropriated and affected by stress levels.
Being a naturopath and a counsellor, I understand so well, from personal experience, how important it is to listen to our bodies and pull back. That we need to rely on the help of others when necessary. Being strong and stoic will only last so long and what then? Sometimes we need to breakdown to break through. That we only get it once we crash and burn. It’s ok. We all do it. However how do we get back on top?
Then the other side of that coin is if we continue and don’t listen to our bodies it can affect our hormones. This is why, when trying to conceive, you are advised to destress and find ways of managing life’s pressures. If you have endometriosis the pain can be exacerbated by stress. I know. I had it. I am now post-menopausal too. So, I have been through the three stages of womanhood.
Female conditions range from but not limited to endometriosis, amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea, PCOS, fertility, fibroids, cycle irregularities and of course menopausal symptoms. Tied in with that are stress hormones, cortisol and adrenaline and the ‘good’ hormones such as dopamine, GABA, serotonin and endorphins.
Then there’s lifestyles tied in with stress that can lead to weight gain and insulin disturbance. On top of that fat cells produce oestrogen causing excess of the hormone which then can throw the progesterone/oestrogen balance out of whack and so affecting ovulation. Another part of the female reproductive system are the breasts. Lactation, mastitis, tenderness during PMS. Our breasts are also just as important.
As you can see all of this is something I can relate to from one perspective or another and so have felt it more the field that I want to focus on. Yet, as my colleague said, we really cover everything. We have all sorts come to clinic and so are well rounded. Just that we sometimes have a special interest and mine I have stated above. I hope all this you find interesting and I welcome you to reach out for a discovery call. Thankyou for your time. Have a great October and see you next month.
