The role a Naturopath plays in your life

March 2020

Hello again! Yet another month has gone by and here we are in the southern hemisphere in Autumn! Today’s blog I thought I would continue on from the last blog but with a slight twist. Why a Naturopath? So, we know ‘when’ to see one, but now why? Why not just go to the doctor?

Many people have had a life of trusting modern medicine. Some may never have heard of natural medicine or even tried it. Some may not have faith in it or have tried it and given up way too early on it and felt it wasn’t for them. Some even self-prescribe because they feel naturopaths are quacks or charge too much and that doctor google will do.

It boils down to personal choice and preference. It is a democracy. So, whatever you feel is best for you then follow that. However, even medical doctors do not recommend Doctor Google. There is a reason and no its not for a medical monopoly on the industry. Its because herbal medicines and supplements can be potent and can have interactions and contraindications. Things can go wrong if you are self-medicating. Trust me I have seen it.

We all have gone out and bought a multi vitamin. That is common. I am talking about herbal supplements you buy online. If you buy something that interferes with your blood pressure and you don’t know this and you have high blood pressure, well…. All I am saying is that we as naturopaths do a full on scientific and medical formal training. We are aware of what each herb can do. Whether two herbs put together are synergistic and works well together or if they clash. We are aware of how some herbal medicines clash with modern medicines. They can potentiate or increase their effectiveness or interact negatively with them.

So, the reason of ‘why a naturopath?’ is because we can monitor and administer the right doses and right herbs. We monitor and research specifically for your unique case. We can work with your doctor if need be. A naturopath takes time to be with you and listens and works hard on your case specifically so there is dedicated focus on just you in that moment. If you have tried that route with a naturopath but feel it was a waste of time, then you probably gave up to quickly or the naturopath may not have been right for you.

Natural medicines build up over time and some work on toning the organs or body. We are used to allopathic medicines taking effect immediately so we think it should be the same with herbal medicines. In some cases, it does, in others it takes a bit of time. I often equate it to wanting a gym body overnight. Not going to happen without dedication. It’s a process. Don’t get me wrong, some herbal medicines are very fast acting and potent. As for nutrition, that is also brilliant at helping us feel better. Sometimes all it takes is a tweak of someone’s diet.

Anyway, that is my rant for the month! I do hope your year has been a good one so far and I look forward to seeing you next month. I also hope this has been helpful.
