December 2020
Happy December folks! Today I thought I would talk about protocols and processes. What I mean is the way getting better happens the naturopathic way. This is to show you that it actually is a process and it actually does show you that you are part of the solution. You can walk into a doctors or naturopath's office and say ‘Fix me!’, however it’s not always that simple. You have a role in the process of helping yourself.
Now this is not a lecture. My aim is to demonstrate how we, as clients, have expectations and then may feel something is not working and that the person you’re seeing is no good. Depending on how long you have been unwell or struggling it can take a while to come back from it and to have perseverance in applying the protocols given. Its as I always say, if you are wanting to be a body builder you can’t just go into a gym and announce you want muscles! You have to put effort in and allow time for your physique to develop. You do this hand in hand with your doctor or naturopath.
There’s a method to the madness, trust me. I have seen in in others and in myself. To never give up with a protocol, with a few exceptions of course. The idea is to condition your health not just band-aid it. To give it a chance to come back to optimum. You have a therapist you are seeing, and they may give you a treatment plan. This plan may cover herbal medicines, supplements, food diaries, diet and nutrition, exercise and self-care such as meditation and de-stressing.
We are just like your PT. We cheer you on as you do your part. Don’t give up too soon and don’t be discouraged. In my time I have seen quick results as well as slower and ongoing achievements. Every condition is different and it does actually require you to put effort in to work as a team with your therapist. Sometimes it may seem boring to eat healthy and to avoid certain foods, but once you get past the initial hunger pangs your cravings change. So if its diet that is altered there are reasons why you have been advised to eat certain ways.
Many times people have done doctor Google and feel they are well read on what is good for them. I am all for self education and in some cases its important you do keep abreast with things yourself as you know your body better than anyone else. Just remember that we, as naturopaths, have had extensive training and are not just quacks. We put so much effort in to help you. On another note you also need to feel you click with your therapist and to be heard. If you are feeling that they aren’t the right fit for you then by all means change therapist. It is your health after all.
On that note I shall wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Please feel free to reach out and chat. I am very friendly and warm and happy to help.
Lisa
