July 2020
Hello everyone! Where has the year gone? I do hope you have all been looking after yourselves? I have been busy as a beaver and finding down time too. We all need to have down time. It’s been a lesson for me as an A type personality to slow down and practice what I preach.
Now being a naturopath means we do help with diet, herbs and supplements. However, we also give lifestyle advice too. We take care of you as a whole. We take our time and listen to you. There is so much to cover, and you are given our undivided attention. A lot of us have been through life events too, so we know how it feels.
Now, as you know, we are in the middle of winter. Plus, we are in lock down to varying degrees due to the current events. How can we take care of ourselves? Well we certainly have seen the inside four walls for months now and some of you are also essential workers. We need to look after our health and, in particular, our immune system. Now, yes the usual eat well and lots of food based vitamins and minerals. Of course! However, what I want to focus on is SLEEP!!
Yes, I am trotting out that old bit of advice. Sleep. Believe me it is the best thing since sliced bread! Going to bed at the same time every night. Avoiding blue light from TVs, ipads, phones or computers for at least an hour before bed. Having a low warm light to send the signal to the brain that you are winding down for sleep. Try sleep from around 10pm to 7am. Or something along those lines. Make sure your bed is clear of clutter and that if you have animals to make sure they either sleep elsewhere or that you claim your section of the bed for yourself. Pets tend to disturb us a few times a night if they sleep on the bed as they move about a bit and you may come out of the deeper states of sleep each time.
Another thing is to simplify your life. Be strict here. Yes, you have things that have to get done. However, just simplifying things really makes a different. For example, I have to do this regularly as I read books, research industry updates, knit, crochet, sew, draw and write my books. I have just recently reduced it to just reading before bed, crochet a little after work whilst I watch the news, and then on the weekends do a little drawing or colouring in as a relaxation method. I have also taken up meditation again. Sometimes inside, sometimes in the back yard in nature.
What I am meaning is you can do everything you want to but segment it so that you aren’t pulled in two. Allot time for each and try to keep it to a set time so you don’t go overboard and go beserk eating into your down time or sleep time.
So, to finish, I want to say to you that you are important. You are valuable. If you don’t look after you then who else will? Pace yourself. Don’t worry about who you may be upsetting. Well, within reason. Just segment your life so you have booked in down time. After all it is vital so that you can do the other things well. Better even!
On that note I shall say ooroo. I will talk to you again next month and talk about the upcoming season change and spring. Take care and look after yourselves.
